Sonia for ensuring security of women and children

Hardeep Singh Bedi/ JAIPUR:  As the two-day Congress Chintan Shivir  ended here, the Congress President Sonia Gandhi rolled the ball for the next general elections in 2014. In her closing remarks, she not only lauded the Manmohan Singh government’s achievements but also hinted the Congress will go for the next general elections keeping women and children in the mind.

Talking about the recent Delhi gang rape, Sonia maintained that “we will ensure that her death will not have been in vain”.  “She is tragically, a symbol of thousands of women, and children, who suffer similar fate, whose lives are ruined or worse, and who are denied justice,” said Sonia.

She said that gender justice and equality was one of the five topics that was discussed over the past two days at Chintan Shivir. She said that for the welfare and well being of women, new programmes have been launched and new laws have been enacted.

Maintaining that the Congress party has always been in forefront of the struggle for the full empowerment of women, she vowed the continue doing so. “Every woman and girl in our country has a fundamental Constitutional right to feel safe and secure, to enjoy full equality in every respect,” said Sonia.

She also assured the party workers that she would be personally pressing for the passage of Women Reservation Bill. “I assure you that I will personally continue to press for the passage of the law that would provide for one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures,” said Sonia.
